Comments, anyone for comments?

In a bid to encourage all you good people to comment on this blog I’ve installed the Link Love plugin. This means that after you’ve made a few comments the rel=”nofollow” is removed from your name in comments and so you’ll get a nice little link from this blog as a thank you for commenting.

Thanks to Jamie for the suggestion.

I just need to decide what link to put in place now …

Excellent idea Fraser, I have long been a fan of the ‘do-follow’ plugin, however I like the concept behind ‘Link Love’ in rewarding regular contributors.

Glad to see that you guys think it is a good idea. Now I just need to watch out for any spammers leaving one word comments to build up their comment count so they get links :)

How many comments is “a few” comments? ;)

“a few” comments is a number that I may change from time to time to ensure that commenters don’t just leave the exact number of comments to get a link and then move on.

I want to encourage discussion and commenting not just get people leaving a specific number of quick comments purely for the link.

I’m so pleased people think its a good idea.

I had an idea about this for a while and was about to start developing the plugin, but then I came across Link Love.

You will probably get a lot more Spam comments, but it is good to reward readers.

James - I think you are right that it might attract a little more spam but I won’t let it last. 2 word posts like “Good Post” won’t be allowed to stay!

I want to reward those that engage in discussion and not those who are just commenting to get the link.

How does this work?

Is it based (counted) on the NAME, EMAIL or URL I type in?
Are previous comments included?

Glad to see you got it working, just the backup needed now mate :)

Hi Chris - It’s email based and previous comments count so you already have the nofollow removed. Now just keep commenting ;-)

I don’t know why more blogs don’t do this. Especially when they first start up. I suppose it does take more moderation work, with all the mindless spammers, but I’m sure it will payoff.
