Domain Name Resources
I’ve just started buying domains again! I tried to stop a while ago but I’ve cracked and gone back to reading lists of expired domains and buying a few that sound catchy. Nothing outstanding so far but I view it as a long term investment. With that in mind I was pleased to get an email from Richard Kershaw letting me know about a new firefox extension he has just released. The domain lookup firefox extension allows you to select a phrase on a page and then easily check if the domain is available. It’s a nice shortcut to save retyping phrases or copy, pasting and removing spaces. Nice one Richard
Here are a few other handy domain related resources
Forums
DNforum
Acorn Domains
Dropcatching
Caught
Dropcatcher
(any tips on how to catch a domain when these two already have it booked?)
Buying & Selling
Sedo
Parking
Just read about these two on Doug’s Mouthpiece so I’ll take a look at them this week.
Domain Parking
iMODO
Registrars
Daily.co.uk - my current favourite after getting fed up with 123-REG
Any other good domain resources to add to that short list?

Namedrive are useful for parking, I find the control panel and reporting is better than Sedo as are revenues.

Hi
Thanks for the info. You should also buy long-tail-keyword domains, they help rank your site in the search engines.

I find it difficult to stop looking at/buying domain names too!
For buying and selling take a look at snapnames tdnam and namejet.
For pure inspiration read Frank Schillings sevenmile.com - unfortunately Frank isn’t blogging much right now but last year he posted some great info.

Dan - thanks for the Namedrive suggestion. I’ve got a bunch of names at Sedo at the moment so I might try a few at Namedrive.
I created an account at iMODO yesterday and it looks quite good too.
John - thanks for the suggested links. I used to read Frank Schillings blog but had to give up as I couldn’t keep up with the number of posts. If he’s slowed down a bit I might try again!
Ralph & John - if we are all buying loads of domains it always amazes me that there are many left. Do you buy & sell or are you just buying to hold & develop?

fraser i generally buy domain names to develop but i have been known to sell the odd one or two if someone make a stupid offer! (well, it would be rude not to!)

LOL - stupid offers are hard to find so it seems only fair to take them.
I don’t think I’ve sold a single domain yet though, any offers I’ve had have been far too sensible! I’m quite happy to keep them all for a couple of years though and then see what happens.

@Fraser: Selling on a domain name …that’d be good! Occasionally I’ll develop a name with wordpress. Recently chefuniforms.com was traded for approx $65K - I was able to reg chefuniforms.co.uk for less than £6
and I’ve plonked some content on it. The site is 1st page in google uk for that phrase and gets some traffic so that’s not too bad - although I won’t be retiring just yet!
I see that top domainer Sahar Sarid (conceptualist.com) is soon to launch a new domain trading platform called bido.com
Finally, if you’re interested in geo (place name) related domains take a look at simplygeo.com and elliotsblog.com
Cheers
John

Fraser,
Do you develop any of these domains in any way, simply buy and hold?
Also do you see this as another revenue stream at some point or are you moving away from affiliate marketing?

Should have put
Also do you see this as another revenue stream in addition to affiliate marketing or are you moving away from affiliate marketing?

John - thanks for your comment and a few more links for me to look at.
Nigel - I’m definitely not planning a move out of affiliate marketing but I see it as being pretty closely linked. All the domains I’ve bought are names that I could see myself developing at some point so that’s always a possibility and when I have spare time I’ll pick another name from the list and see what I can do with it.
Long term I think decent quality generic domains could be a good revenue source though.

Hi, great articlem thanks. Also try using http://www.NameDrive.co.uk as another method for buying, selling and parking domain names as they often pay more then Sedo. Cheers! AJ.
