Interested in buying or selling websites?

Just a quick post as heads up about a new mailing list that I recently signed up to called We Buy Websites where you can join and be kept up to date with brief ads from people wanting to sell a website. It’s run by Richard Kershaw and so he screens each ad before it goes out so that means you are not getting sent rubbish.

I haven’t yet bought a site from this list but often buying a site with some history behind it is a great starting point for better search engine rankings. Also if you can apply your own experience in a particular area to a site with a lot of exisiting traffic then you might be able to recoup your expenses just by making a few tweaks to the revenue streams.

Buying and then tweaking is the sort of thing that Scott at Self Made Minds often writes about so have a read there as well.

Good luck!

Will be interesting to see just how good these sites are, and whether the prices are realistic. Seen one that wouldn’t be out of place on ebay, and another that was grossly overpriced IMO:

Monthly Income: is $2.5k
Price: $70k

Still good to give you ideas if nothing else.

@Chris We’ve had some great sites so far, IMHO, including a major dating platform and a niche finance site earnings six figures sterling each year.

The point of the list is that there’s a higher quality-threshold than most other forums. The closest analog would be SitePoint’s Premium Sites section. As a very rough rule of thumb, the sites generally have 10k+ visitors/mo or earnings in the thousands USD/mo.

There’s been the odd exception so far, but it’s very early days for the list.

The $70k site you mention was more of a conventional business than just a website, with an owner in no hurry to sell. Most are priced far more realistically.

Keep the feedback coming, and let me know if you’d like to see a few of the higher end sites we’ve had come through since the list started earlier this month. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’m hoping to buy a site soon from a previous owner–but I have to wait until it expires, then hopefully it doesn’t get snatched up by anyone else..thanks for the link!

@Richard – I hope you took it as feedback, and not as whinging as it may appear. I am sure there will be some corkers that will be come to light, and others that aren’t exactly ones that will float my boat – thats down to personal preference.

As I say, it gives people good ideas and its a great way of seeing/hearing about sales you wouldn’t normally otherwise.

I actually have a reason to open up my email inbox every morning now :)
