Vista – I’m not yet convinced

I picked up a new laptop recently as I’m switching to working from an office outside of the house again. It was preinstalled with Vista which looks very nice but I haven’t really seen any benefit from it yet. I feel a bit like it’s trying too hard to protect me from myself and double checking on every little thing I want to do.

Also Fireworks 8 seems to be incompatible in some way and causes Vista to drop back to basic colours which is an annoying quirk that I haven’t yet figured out. I’m sure it will improve in time though and it’s probably most that I’m not used to it.

1 nice feature is side bar widgets combined with Amnesty Generator which allows you to display any snippet on your desktop so I’ve gone with the bumpzee widget which means I can keep an eye on the latest posts and also see who has been visiting my blog recently.

There must be plenty of new opportunities for affiliate marketers creating desktop widgets but then if I start on that I’ll just be recycling what I’ve been learning from Cost Per News so you would be better getting the information at the source :)

Have you used Vista yet? Are desktop widgets an opportunity or just a gimmick?

As I mentioned on my site, I got sick of Windows XP and instead of doing a re-install and putting Vista on, i’ve switched to ubuntu instead.

One of the best decisions i’ve made – very easy to install, easy to use, loads of open souce applications that work perfectly and extremely user friendly.

The widgets support looks nice though – would love to get that working on my desktop so will keep an eye out.

If you continue to get annoyed with Vista you should give ubuntu a try.

I’ve been playing with Vista for a number of months now, and am waiting for my official release to drop on my door mat anyday. I think with all new versions, it takes a good couple of weeks to bed in and for the user to get used to the new way of working.

I do however like the idea of adding Bumpzee widgets to the side of the desktop. I think they will start off as a gimmick, but given time they will become a necessity. A widget that extracts network data for realtime balances would be nice!

whoa very cool desktop widget. I just made one for OS X using Amnesty.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of desktop widgets, or desktop anything for that matter.
I never see my desktop beneath the three dozen windows I always seem to have going.

I don’t consider myself the average PC user, though. I’m guessing that our target user has much simpler computing habits. If I watch my mother and daughter use Windows, they seem to close windows before moving on to something else.

The influence of Sam Harrelson is overwhelming in this post. ;-)

The only problem with my bumpzee desktop widget is that it doesn’t update very often. How about you Scott – mine only seems to update when I first start the computer? :(
